Dual diagnosis treatment — also called co-occurring disorders treatment or integrated treatment — is a specialized form of care that simultaneously addresses both the substance use disorder and the co-occurring mental health condition within a unified, coordinated treatment framework.

Traditional treatment models often treat addiction and mental health separately — sometimes even in different facilities — leading to fragmented care where each condition is treated in isolation. This approach consistently produces poor outcomes, as the untreated condition inevitably fuels relapse in the other.

Integrated dual diagnosis treatment recognizes the interconnection between mental health and addiction. Psychiatric evaluation is conducted early; medications for mental health conditions are managed alongside addiction treatment medications; individual therapy addresses both the addiction and mental health dimensions; and the treatment team collaborates closely to provide coherent, unified care.

All patients at Sangam Nasha Mukti Kendra undergo a comprehensive psychiatric evaluation at intake. This evaluation screens for depression, anxiety disorders, PTSD, bipolar disorder, psychotic disorders, ADHD, and other conditions that may co-occur with addiction.

When a co-occurring disorder is identified, our Medical Director develops an integrated treatment plan addressing both conditions. Psychiatric medications are managed carefully, balancing effectiveness against any interactions with addiction treatment medications. Our clinical psychologists provide therapy that addresses both the addiction and the mental health dimension.

We use evidence-based therapies specifically adapted for dual diagnosis patients — including CBT for co-occurring disorders, DBT (Dialectical Behaviour Therapy) for emotion dysregulation, EMDR for trauma, and interpersonal therapy for depression. Patients with serious mental illness receive additional psychiatric monitoring and support throughout treatment.
